Where it works

What changes in B Standard

The complete standard interval pattern is shifted down five semitones, so familiar shapes produce concert chords in B standard.

First musical idea

Make the tuning sound intentional

Alternate a tight low B pedal with B5, D5 and E5 shapes while keeping the bass notes short.

Shape tip: Keep the low B controlled with short palm-muted notes and use fifth-string roots when the lowest string becomes too dominant.

Instrument care

Retune to B E A D F# B safely

Use a baritone-scale instrument or very heavy strings with a professional setup.

Change one string at a time, approach the target pitch gradually and recheck every string after the neck settles. Stop if a string feels unusually tight, the bridge lifts or the instrument reacts unpredictably.

Beginner questions

Quick answers before you play

What are the notes in B Standard Guitar Tuning?

From the sixth string to the first string, tune to B E A D F# B. Use the six playable reference notes above and recheck them after the neck settles.

Is B Standard Guitar Tuning safe for my guitar?

Use a baritone-scale instrument or very heavy strings with a professional setup. Stop if a string feels unusually tight, the bridge moves or the guitar becomes difficult to intonate.

Can I use normal chord shapes in B Standard Guitar Tuning?

Some shapes may still work, but a baritone tuning changes at least part of the fretboard. Start with the open strings, simple drones and the shape guidance on this page.

Why do the strings go out of tune again after retuning?

Changing one string changes the total tension on the neck. Tune all six strings, wait briefly and repeat the process until every reference pitch remains stable.
