Drop C is common in modern rock and metal. Unlike Drop D, it changes all six strings, so familiar open chord names and string tension are affected.
Because the strings become looser, many players use heavier gauges and a setup suited to the lower tuning. Drop C is effectively Drop D with every string lowered one whole step. The result is C-G-C-F-A-D, with lower pitch and reduced string tension compared with standard tuning.

Relationship to Drop D
The lowest string is dropped relative to the next strings, preserving the one-finger power-chord shape. The whole guitar is also tuned lower than standard.
String tension
Lower pitch means lower tension with the same strings. Very light strings may feel floppy, buzz more or lose tuning stability.
Setup consequences
A major gauge change can alter neck relief, action and intonation. Frequent Drop C players often use a dedicated setup or a separate guitar.
The guitar may need to be set up for it
Regular use of Drop C often benefits from heavier strings, adjusted neck relief and corrected intonation. Simply detuning a guitar with light strings can produce loose feel, buzzing and unstable pitch.
The interval layout still resembles Drop D
The relationship among the strings is the same as Drop D, only a whole step lower. Riff shapes and one-finger power chords transfer directly, but every sounding note is lower.
Tune and check the result
- Use a chromatic tuner that displays all note names.
- Turn pegs slowly and verify the correct octave by ear.
- Play low power chords before using complex shapes.
- If Drop C becomes your main tuning, ask a technician about suitable string gauge and setup.
- Tune every string down one whole step to D-G-C-F-A-D, then lower the sixth string once more to C.
- Check open-string tuning again after playing for a minute because the lower tension may settle.
When the guitar still feels wrong
The strings feel extremely loose
Use a heavier set rather than trying to compensate with excessive picking force. A common choice depends on scale length and personal feel.
Chords sound out of tune higher on the neck
A major tuning change can expose intonation problems. If open strings are correct but fretted notes are not, the bridge setup may need adjustment for the chosen string gauge and tuning.
