Electric Guitar vs Acoustic Guitar: What Is the Difference?

An acoustic guitar makes most of its volume through its hollow body. An electric guitar uses pickups and needs an amplifier, interface or processor to produce its full sound. Both use the same basic notes, tuning and many of the same chords.

Beginners are often told that they must start on acoustic guitar. That is not true. The best first guitar is the one that suits the music you actually want to play and makes you want to practise.

The two instruments feel different. Electric guitars usually use lighter strings and lower string height, while steel-string acoustics often require more finger pressure. The choice affects feel, volume and the equipment around the instrument, but it does not lock you into one style forever. Many players begin on the guitar that best matches the music they love, then add the other type later when their needs change.

Sound production

An acoustic body acts like a natural speaker. An electric guitar pickup creates an electrical signal that is shaped by an amplifier, cabinet and effects.

Physical feel

Electric necks are often slimmer and bends are easier. Acoustic guitars usually have more string tension and a larger body. Classical guitars use nylon strings and have a wider neck.

Volume and equipment

Acoustic guitar works immediately. Electric guitar normally needs a cable and something that can amplify or monitor the signal. Headphone amps, audio interfaces and browser-based rigs can also work.

Music and technique

Open chords, rhythm, scales and note names transfer between both instruments. Some techniques are more common on one type, but learning either one builds useful skills.

String feel and setup can matter more than body type

A well-set-up acoustic can feel easier than a poorly adjusted electric guitar. String gauge, action and neck relief strongly influence the pressure required, so judge the individual instrument rather than assuming every electric is effortless and every acoustic is difficult.

The sound is produced in different ways

An acoustic body moves air directly, which gives you a complete sound without amplification. An electric guitar produces a relatively quiet acoustic sound and relies on pickups, an amplifier or digital processing for most of its final tone.

Check this on your guitar

  1. List three artists or songs you want to play and check which guitar type is used most often.
  2. Notice whether those songs are mainly electric, steel-string acoustic or classical.
  3. Try the neck and body size before buying.
  4. Budget for necessary extras such as a cable, strap, tuner and amplification.
  5. Play the same open chord on both types and notice the difference in string tension, body size and response.

When it still feels uncomfortable

The setup may be poor or the strings may be unnecessarily heavy. A technician can lower excessive action, and lighter strings may help.

An electric guitar sounds thin without an amp

That is normal. Its pickups are designed to feed an amplifier, audio interface or processor, which contributes a large part of the final sound.

You are choosing only by appearance

Appearance matters, but also check neck comfort, body size, string height, tuning stability and whether the instrument supports the music and practice situation you actually have.
