What Are the Main Parts of a Guitar?

Short answer

The body holds the instrument, the neck and frets give you different notes, the strings create the sound, and the tuning machines change the pitch of each string. Electric guitars also have pickups and controls that send the sound to an amplifier or computer.

You do not need to memorize every technical name before you start playing. It is enough to know which part you are touching and what job it does. That makes lessons, setup advice and troubleshooting much easier to understand.

Most guitars share the same basic layout. Acoustic and electric models look different, but both have strings running from the tuning machines, across the nut and fretboard, to the bridge.

Knowing the names of the main parts also helps when you ask for advice. A phrase such as "the string buzzes near the fifth fret" is far more useful than "something on the neck sounds wrong," and it lets a teacher or technician identify the likely cause quickly.

The headstock and tuning machines

The headstock is the end of the neck. The tuning machines, also called tuners or machine heads, tighten or loosen the strings. Tightening a string raises its pitch; loosening it lowers the pitch.

The neck, fretboard and frets

The neck is the long wooden section you hold with your fretting hand. The fretboard is its front surface. The metal fret wires divide the string into notes. You press just behind a fret wire to shorten the vibrating string and create a higher note.

The body, bridge and pickups

The body supports the guitar. The bridge anchors the strings. On an acoustic guitar, the hollow body makes the sound louder. On an electric guitar, magnetic pickups sense the string vibration and turn it into an electrical signal.

The controls

Electric guitars usually have a volume knob, one or more tone knobs and a pickup selector. Volume changes signal level. Tone controls remove some high frequencies. The selector chooses which pickup or combination of pickups you hear.

The nut and bridge set the speaking length

The nut supports the strings at the headstock end and the bridge supports them at the body end. The section between those two points is the part that vibrates when you play an open string. Pressing a fret creates a new temporary end point and shortens that vibrating length.

Pickups do not work like microphones

A magnetic pickup senses the movement of steel strings inside a magnetic field. It does not mainly listen to the sound in the room. That is why an unplugged electric guitar can be quiet while the amplified signal is loud and detailed.

Check this on your guitar

  1. Point to the headstock, nut, first fret, twelfth fret, bridge and body on your own guitar.
  2. Name the controls before you plug in. Turn each knob gently and listen to what changes.
  3. Do not adjust screws or the truss rod yet. First learn which parts are meant for everyday use and which parts are setup adjustments.
  4. Say the name of each part while touching it, then explain its job in one sentence.
  5. Plug in at a low volume and compare the neck and bridge pickups with the same chord.

When it still feels uncomfortable

Every knob seems to do the same thing

Use one pickup at a time and play the same chord while turning only one control. Small controlled comparisons make the difference easier to hear.

You are unsure whether a part should move

Tuning machines, switches and normal control knobs are designed to move. The bridge, neck screws and truss rod are setup parts and should not be adjusted casually.

You confuse the fret with the space between frets

The metal strip is the fret wire. Your finger normally presses in the space just behind it, close enough to get a clean note without sitting directly on top of the wire.
