What Does a Phaser Do?

Short answer

A phaser creates moving peaks and dips in the frequency spectrum by shifting phase and mixing the result with the original signal. It sounds smooth, swirling and less metallic than a flanger.

Phase describes the timing relationship between waves. A phaser changes that relationship across selected frequencies, so some frequencies reinforce while others cancel. The moving cancellation pattern creates the familiar sweep. It works on clean funk, rock leads, psychedelic parts and subtle movement behind chords.

Stages affect the number and shape of notches

Phasers are often described by the number of stages in the circuit. More stages generally create more notches and a more complex sweep, although the exact sound also depends on feedback and voicing.

Emphasises the sweep and can make the effect sharper or more vocal.

It is not simply another delay effect

Chorus and flanger use audible time delay as a central mechanism. A phaser uses phase-shifting filters, which is why its movement is often rounder and less metallic than flanging.

Where phaser works musically

Slow phaser can add movement to clean chords without occupying as much space as chorus. Faster settings can animate funk rhythm, while a phaser before distortion creates a more integrated vocal sweep and a phaser after distortion sounds more obviously processed.

Hear what the controls change

  1. Start on clean guitar.
  2. Use one repeated phrase.
  3. Try phaser before distortion for a softer effect and after distortion for a stronger sweep.
  4. Keep mix low when the arrangement is busy.
  5. Use a sustained clean chord and set the rate slowly enough to follow one full sweep.
  6. Add a little feedback or resonance and listen for the movement becoming more focused.

When the effect does not sound right

The effect disappears in a busy part

Increase depth or feedback slightly, or place the phaser before distortion so the sweep becomes part of the driven texture. Avoid raising every control at once.

The sound becomes nasal

Reduce feedback or the number of stages if that control is available.
