How Do You Record Electric Guitar?

Short answer

Record electric guitar either with a microphone on an amplifier or directly through an audio interface. Direct recording is a flexible home method and allows amp and cabinet sounds to be changed later.

A good recording begins with clean performance, tuning and level. Expensive plugins cannot repair a badly tuned or clipped take. Direct input, often called DI, captures the guitar pickup signal before amp processing. Electric guitar can be recorded with a microphone on an amplifier or directly through an audio interface. Direct recording is flexible and quiet, while a miked amplifier captures the physical speaker and room interaction.

Hear the processed tone while recording without printing every effect permanently unless desired.

Record peaks safely below 0 dBFS, often around -12 to -6 dBFS for strong attacks.

A clean DI track preserves options

Recording the direct pickup signal allows amp and cabinet processing to be changed later or sent through a real amplifier again. The DI level must remain clean and unclipped.

Microphone position changes tone dramatically

Near the centre of a speaker cone is usually brighter; moving toward the edge becomes darker. Distance adds more room sound and changes phase relationships, so small position changes matter.

Set up the signal path

  1. Tune before each take.
  2. Record mono guitar to a mono track.
  3. Use a click or backing track.
  4. Leave headroom.
  5. Save a clean DI when possible.
  6. Edit less by recording shorter focused sections.
  7. Create a mono track, select the correct input and set gain with the loudest playing.
  8. Record a short test, listen back through the full mix and correct tone or level before recording the complete take.

When you hear noise, delay or no signal

The waveform is tiny

Raise interface gain, but do not chase a visually huge waveform.

The take sounds wide only after copying it

Copied audio is the same performance. Record a genuine second take for natural stereo width.

The recording is too quiet after avoiding clipping

That is normal if healthy headroom remains. Raise playback level later; do not force the input close to zero simply to make the waveform look large.
