How Do You Connect a Guitar to a Computer?

Short answer

Connect an electric guitar to an audio interface instrument input with a 1/4-inch TS cable, then select that interface as the input in your browser, recording app or guitar software.

Do not plug a guitar into a random headphone output or expect a passive USB adapter to provide correct results. The guitar needs a suitable high-impedance input.

After connection, the computer still needs software that processes or records the signal and an output path to headphones or speakers. A guitar should normally reach the computer through an audio interface or another device with a proper instrument input. The interface converts the signal, provides gain control and sends the processed sound to headphones or speakers.

The complete path matters

The signal travels from guitar to cable, instrument input, computer software or browser, then back through the interface to headphones or monitors. A missing selection at any stage can produce silence even when the cable is connected correctly.

Input mode

Select INST or Hi-Z, not line or microphone, unless the device automatically detects it.

Monitoring

Listen through headphones or speakers connected to the selected audio output.

Permissions

Browsers and operating systems may require microphone/audio-input permission even though the source is a guitar.

USB is not the guitar input itself

The USB cable carries digital audio between the interface and computer. The guitar still connects to the interface with a normal instrument cable unless the guitar has a built-in digital output.

Set up the signal path

  1. Install drivers.
  2. Connect before opening the app if detection is unreliable.
  3. Select the interface as both input and output in the operating system and the guitar application.
  4. Set gain.
  5. Enable amp/cab processing for a natural direct tone.
  6. Connect the guitar to the interface instrument input, then connect the interface by USB.

When you hear noise, delay or no signal

The meter moves but you hear nothing

The input works; the output or monitoring setting is wrong. Select the interface output and enable monitoring.

The sound is thin and harsh

Add an amp and cabinet simulation. Raw direct electric guitar is not a finished tone.

The computer uses the built-in microphone instead

Open the application input selector and choose the exact interface channel. Browser tools may also need permission to access the device.
