Bluetooth headphones add substantial wireless delay and are usually unsuitable for live guitar monitoring. Audio latency is the time between playing a note and hearing the monitored result. It comes from conversion, buffering and processing throughout the system, and even a modest delay can make rhythm feel disconnected.

Time used by effects, amp models and plugins.
Reported buffer time is not the whole experience
Applications may show a calculated value that excludes hidden safety buffers or device delays. The practical test is whether the complete monitored path feels immediate while playing.
Round-trip latency includes several stages
The signal is converted into digital audio, processed in the computer and converted back to analogue output. The buffer setting is important, but drivers, plugins and hardware also contribute.
Latency is most noticeable in rhythm
A delayed monitored note can make the player strike earlier to compensate, which creates poor timing when the delay changes or disappears. Fix the monitoring path rather than training the hands around a faulty response.
Set up the signal path
- Use a proper low-latency driver.
- Use the interface manufacturer driver where available and close unnecessary heavy applications.
- Choose 64 or 128 samples for playing if stable.
- Raise the buffer for mixing when live response is less important.
- Avoid Bluetooth monitoring.
- Lower buffer size gradually while checking for crackles, then keep the smallest stable setting.
When you hear noise, delay or no signal
Low buffer causes clicks
The computer cannot finish processing in time. Raise the buffer or reduce effects and background load.
Direct monitoring has no effects
It bypasses software. Use software monitoring for processed tone or hardware that can process effects internally.
Latency remains high despite a small buffer
Confirm that input and output use the same interface, disable high-latency plugins and avoid Bluetooth headphones, which add substantial delay.
