Buffer Size and Sample Rate Explained

Short answer

Buffer size controls how much audio the computer processes at once. Sample rate controls how many audio samples are taken per second. Smaller buffers reduce latency; higher sample rates increase processing load.

These settings affect stability and responsiveness more than basic musical quality for a beginner. A practical starting point is 44.1 or 48 kHz and a 64–128 sample buffer for live playing, increasing the buffer if clicks occur.

Buffer size

Measured in samples. Small buffers respond quickly but give the computer less time.

Sample rate

44.1 kHz and 48 kHz are common. All devices and apps should agree on the selected rate.

Latency relationship

At the same sample rate, fewer samples mean a shorter buffer time.

CPU load

Higher sample rate and complex effects require more calculations.

Mixing versus playing

Use a small buffer for performance and a larger buffer for heavy mixing when latency is less important.

Smaller buffers reduce delay but increase deadlines

With fewer samples in each block, the computer must complete processing more frequently. That feels more immediate but leaves less time for plugins and background work, increasing the chance of crackles.

Higher sample rates are not automatically better

They increase data and processor use and can reduce buffer time at the same sample count. Common rates such as 44.1 or 48 kHz are fully suitable for guitar recording and online audio.

Set up the signal path

  1. Start at 48 kHz.
  2. Try 128 samples.
  3. Lower to 64 for better feel if stable.
  4. Raise to 256 or 512 when projects become heavy.
  5. Choose one sample rate for the project and keep the interface, software and exported files consistent.
  6. Use a small stable buffer while monitoring live guitar, then increase it during mixing if the project becomes heavy.
