A guitar pickup does not provide the correct power or processing for normal headphones. You need a device that amplifies and monitors the signal.
Headphones are useful for quiet practice, but wired models are strongly preferred because Bluetooth delay makes live playing uncomfortable. Headphones need a device that can receive the guitar signal, apply any desired amp or effects processing and drive the headphone speakers. A passive guitar output alone is not a suitable headphone amplifier.

Several devices can provide the path
A practice amp, headphone amp, multi-effects unit, audio interface or digital modeller can all work. The choice affects portability, tone options and whether a computer is required.
Wired headphones avoid extra delay
Bluetooth systems encode, transmit and decode audio, usually adding enough latency to disturb live playing. Wired headphones connected to the monitoring device are the reliable choice.
Protect hearing during long sessions
Headphones can produce high sound pressure without feeling as loud as a room amplifier. Set a conservative level, take breaks and avoid compensating for an exciting tone by continually raising the output.
Set up the signal path
- Start with output volume low, enable the amp or cabinet processing and raise the headphone level gradually.
- Use wired headphones.
- Enable cabinet simulation.
- Take listening breaks.
- Keep ears safe; distorted guitar can feel quieter than it actually is.
- Connect the guitar to the instrument input of the chosen device.
